I'll admit I do love dinosaurs. So much that this entry is about ANOTHER shot of a dinosaur being chased by something. Recently I was given the chance of working with a rig made by two of my class mates India Lane and Curtis Clarke. Its a Baryonyx [a fish eating dinosaur, kind of like a Spinosaur without the sail on its back]. It was at a time when I really got interested in camera animation. I liked the idea of animating a shot that shows a real sense of speed.
I decided to have the Baryonyx running through an empty dried up riverbed. I put the camera low down with the ground so that the ground rushes passed the camera giving a sense of just how fast the Baryonyx was running. I based the animation for the Baryonyx on that of a horse as it was something I had seen in Pixar's The Good Dinosaur and wanted to try myself. It was also something I had wanted to try it in a previous project but it just didn't fit.
I then added a vehicle chasing it with a large machine gun. It was fun to animate the car as I don't often animate vehicles.
In addition to the car I added an egg in the Baryonyx's hands. This was with the hopes of giving stakes to the shot and also a hint of narrative. Why the Baryonyx has an egg and why it's being chased are questions that could leave the shot open to being continued at some point. Here is progression of the shot.
